How
does surgical stainless steel become magnetic?
The cold-working (machining) stresses on non-magnetic grades of
stainless steel during the manufacture of surgical instruments
will cause a material property change. This change makes
the material magnetic, or capable of attracting to a magnet. |

|
Will
demagnetizing change the surgical stainless steel back to
non-magnetic?
No, demagnetizing eliminates magnetism by disorienting the
magnetic charges in the material, but will not change the
material's properties or response to a magnet. |

What
are the causes of magnetism in surgical instruments?
Common causes of magnetism include cold-working during
manufacturing, scrubbing, repairing, polishing, and handling, as
well as contact with or close proximity to magnetic instruments,
holding pads, and other magnetized objects. |

What
problems can magnetism cause in surgical instruments?
Magnetism causes surgical needles to cling, wrap around and bend
away from surgical needle holders, surgical instruments to cling
together on trays, and may cause micro-metal particles to cling
to surgical instruments. |

|
Are
there guidelines for acceptable residual magnetism levels in
surgical instruments?
A small surgical needle will cling to a needle holder with a
magnetism level of 3 gauss. Larger surgical instruments
and needles are affected at higher residual magnetism levels
such as 5 gauss. Use the
RESIDUMETER®II
gaussmeter for checking magnetism levels in surgical instruments
and developing acceptable guidelines for your facility. |

Can trays of
instruments be demagnetized?
Yes,
NEUTROLATOR® countertop medical
demagnetizers are capable of demagnetizing entire trays of
surgical instruments. A single layer of instruments is
recommended, and they may be wrapped in sterile material. |

What
are the benefits of
demagnetizing?
Demagnetizing surgical instruments with the
NEUTROLATOR® eliminates magnetism and the
related problems plaguing the surgical team. Save time and
money by demagnetizing in-house as opposed to utilizing outside
demagnetizing services. Reduce the amount of rejected
surgical instruments and save costs on unnecessary reprocessing
and/or instrument replacement. The
NEUTROLATOR® medical demagnetizers are
user-friendly, highly reliable, and guaranteed to solve your
magnetism problems. |
